Living with Size Zero

Hello, frands. It’s #TBT and time for a vintage piece. This originally went up in January of 2012.

If you ask a random woman what she would like to change about herself, there’s a decent she will say something about her body. Within that answer, most would probably say they want to be smaller, with less fat. This preference for thinness usually exceeds interest in health. In fact, some survey research has found that most women would rather have a disability like blindness than be obese.

The discrepancy in size between the average model/actress and the average woman has become a chasm of difference. For a female in this climate to feel even confidence in her body is to choose between a rigorous and unreasonable adherence to weight maintenance or a “fuck you all” attitude.  The constant pressure to “achieve” physical perfection has real life consequences: everything from danger to one’s health and formidable depression to being a huge ridiculous waste of time and resources.

Today we look more at this struggle. This film looks at real women who live and breathe this   problem: from a woman who subjects herself to horrifying unhealthy behaviors to be skinny and one who perceives her natural but extremely thin body as a “poisoned chalice.”  Watch the whole playlist to see the full-length feature.
